Arizona Teacher Testing

Everything You Need to Know about Arizona's Teacher Certification Exams

Assessments for Arizona Educators

In order to become a teacher in Arizona you must take and pass the appropriate Subject Knowledge and Professional Knowledge Examinations or qualify for a waiver of exam requirements. You will also take and pass the Arizona and U.S. Constitution Examination or meet college coursework exemptions. Arizona Teachers of Tomorrow has created resources to help you with this and the information below is from our work with the Arizona Department of Education (ADE).

The exams are administrated by NES in partnership with ADE. You’ll need to use your social security number with all testing in order to process your teacher certification paperwork. If you test in Arizona all scores will automatically be sent to the ADE.

Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments

Our Program Advisors play an important role in helping you select the certification area that complement your skills and interests.

You will take the specific AEPA Subject Knowledge test in the subject area in which you are seeking certification. You may take additional subject tests to meet federal highly qualified status. This is recommended as it makes you a more qualified candidate for a teaching position. The ADE site on required Arizona educator exams will help you determine which exams to pass to meet your goals in your new teaching career.

It is a requirement for all new teachers to pass an exam on the Constitutions of the U.S. and Arizona or successfully complete ADE approved coursework in this area before becoming certified. You can register for this exam on the Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments website.

The Professional Knowledge Test

The Professional Knowledge Test can be taken before you teach, but most wait until they have been in the classroom teaching, as the test is focused on the application of pedagogy. Pedagogy is defined as the art, science, or profession of teaching, and pertains to such concepts as classroom management, lesson planning, conducting assessments, and child development. You will take and pass the Professional Knowledge Test before being recommended for your Arizona Standard Professional Teaching Certificate.
