Great presentation at the Florida State Board of Education on the teacher pipeline. Like all states, they are seeing a teaching shortage even though they do have some very solid teacher certification options. The interesting thing we found from speaking to the Florida DOE is that a lot of people on the Temporary Certificate never proceed to the full certificate – a full 35% don’t make it through.
An odd thing about the Florida Temporary Certificate is that you don’t actually have to be enrolled in a preparation program. You have three years to complete your coursework through a program like our Florida Teachers of Tomorrow – but no one is making sure you are getting it done. So many people procrastinate and end up never getting their requirements complete which means they have to leave the classroom.
That has to change – if you are in teaching, you need to be trained to teach.
