Everything You Need to Know about the Nevada Praxis Exams

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators


The Nevada Department of Education requires each teacher candidate to pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam (Praxis Core) to measure your fundamental knowledge and skills. You can become exempt from the Praxis Core if you hold a conferred master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with certain GRE scores, or by passing the CBEST. Our expert Program Advisors will guide you through the exemptions policies and what you may qualify for.

Praxis Testing

Our Program Advisors play an important role in helping you select the certification area that complement your skills and interests.

In addition to the Praxis Core or exemption from it, secondary teachers (Grades 7-12) will take the Nevada Praxis Subject Assessment prior to initial licensure for their content specific area below:

  • Biological Science: Test 5235
  • Mathematics: Test 5161
  • General Science: Test 5435
  • English Language Arts: Test 5038
  • Social Studies: Test 5081
  • Spanish— World Language: Test 5195

To qualify for a standard license to teach Elementary, teachers will take the Praxis Elementary Multiple Subjects Test (5001).

To qualify for a standard license to teach Special Education, teachers will take the Praxis Special Education: Core Knowledge & Applications (5354).

Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching


Teachers seeking licensure in Secondary areas and Special Education are required to pass the Nevada Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) to receive a Standard License. You can take the exam before you begin teaching, but most wait until they have been in the classroom teaching, as the test is focused on the application of pedagogy in the classroom. The test you take depends on the instructional license you are working towards and grade level you are teaching- PLT K-6 (test 5622) or PLT 7-12 (test 5624).
