The responsibilities of a special education teacher vary greatly depending on the age and unique needs of their students. In general they usually include the following:

1. Assessing students skills to determine their needs
2. Adapting lessons to meet the needs of students
3. Planning, organizing, and assigning activities that are specific to each students abilities
4. Developing individualized education programs for students
5. Adjusting these education plans throughout the school year
6. Discussing student’s progress with parents, counselors, principals, and administrators on a regular basis.

The Nevada Teachers of Tomorrow program is approved by the state of Nevada to license special education teachers. All you need is a four-year bachelor’s degree, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher to get started. Once we’ve received your completed application, we will require official transcripts to be admitted to our program.

Step 1: Training

Upon admission you will gain full access to innovative, engaging online training and teacher observations to get you ready for the classroom. The Nevada Teachers of Tomorrow program provides extensive training in pedagogy, allowing special education teachers to gain all of the skills and knowledge necessary to become an effective teacher before ever stepping foot in the classroom. Throughout the training you will observe the classrooms of veteran special education teachers and complete projects to expand upon that field experience.

Step 2: Testing

Potential teachers seeking their certification in Nevada must first pass the Praxis Test 5751: Core Academic Skills for Educators: Combined Test.

To become a special education teacher regardless of what grade you are teaching, you must pass the Praxis 5354 Special Education: Core Knowledge and Applications.

All elementary and middle school special education teachers require a passing score on the Praxis 5622: Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades K-6.

All secondary school special education teachers require a passing score on the Praxis 5624: Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7-12.

Step 3: Teaching

From the moment you begin teaching, you will earn full pay and benefits. Nevada Teachers will assign you a Field Supervisor. In collaboration with your Mentor Teacher, they will support you throughout your internship. Once that is complete in addition to your program requirements, you will receive your Standard Professional License and become a licensed teacher in the state of Nevada.
