Who Is Required to Take the STR?
As of January 1, 2021, you will be required to take the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam, if you are seeking certification in one or multiple of the following subject areas:
When Does This New Requirement Start?
This new requirement applies to any candidate who has not been issued their Standard Certificate by or before December 31, 2020. As of January 1, 2021, all candidates pursuing certification in one of the prescribed subject areas will be required to take the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam.
Why Is STR Required?
The purpose of the STR exam is to help address four major areas which lend room to improvement, based on various state findings:
If you are pursuing your certification in (1) Core Subjects EC-6, (2) English Language Arts and Reading 4-8, or (3) English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies 4-8, then yes – you will need to pass the STR exam if your Standard Certificate is not issued by December 30, 2020.

Registration for the STR Exam is open now, with testing dates available starting January 2021.
The STR Exam is administered through Pearson. Once you receive approval from Texas Teachers, you can register for the exam here.
