{"id":10503,"date":"2018-05-22T08:42:52","date_gmt":"2018-05-22T13:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/?p=10503"},"modified":"2019-09-27T08:52:06","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T13:52:06","slug":"edtpa-issues-illinois","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/blog\/insights\/edtpa-issues-illinois\/","title":{"rendered":"edTPA Issues in Illinois"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Illinois General Assembly just passed a resolution to ask the Illinois State Board to end the edTPA.\u00a0 The include a seriously long list of &#8220;whereas&#8217;s&#8221; to outline why the don&#8217;t like the edTPA in that state.\u00a0 To break it down:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Illinois has a severe teacher shortage &#8211; over 2,500 open positions at the start of school year last year<\/li>\n<li>The Teacher Shortage is seriously hurting rural districts in Illinois<\/li>\n<li>edTPA takes away significant time from the classroom<\/li>\n<li>Inner city school teachers are having a much more difficult time on edTPAP<\/li>\n<li>Pearson scorers are not teachers grading teachers<\/li>\n<li>There is a significant cost burden to the teachers and Pearson is profiting from this test<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Teacher testing is becoming a huge issue across the country as the shortage becomes worse and we realize that the tests disproportionally affect teachers of color.\u00a0 New York lowered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/posts\/ny\/2017\/09\/12\/new-yorks-most-controversial-teacher-certification-exam-is-now-a-little-easier-to-pass\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cut score of their edTPA<\/a> after they found it was keeping diverse teachers out of the classroom. More teacher testing reforms are definitely coming.<\/p>\n<p>Resolutions don&#8217;t usually do anything, but it is interesting.\u00a0 I spent a lot of time this spring meeting with Illinois legislators and they do know they have a severe teacher shortage crisis.
