{"id":1097,"date":"2016-07-13T17:02:14","date_gmt":"2016-07-13T17:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/?p=1097"},"modified":"2019-09-27T09:19:36","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T14:19:36","slug":"teacher-hiring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/blog\/insights\/teacher-hiring\/","title":{"rendered":"Teacher Hiring Coming Up Short"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teacher hiring around the country is coming up very short this year. \u00a0Just today we hear about the following teacher shortages from around the nation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.argusleader.com\/story\/news\/education\/2016\/07\/13\/teacher-shortage-persists-despite-pay-increase\/86983516\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Dakota<\/a> -in spite of $63 million in salary increases, to move starting salaries from $33K to $40K &#8211; they still had 186 openings compared to 215 last year<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ksnt.com\/2016\/07\/12\/a-teacher-shortage-in-kansas-has-some-looking-for-a-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kansas<\/a> &#8211; college of ed enrollment down 2300 in just 3 years experiencing years of continued teacher shortages &#8211; but only in the &#8220;task force&#8221; phase of actually doing something<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lasvegassun.com\/news\/2016\/jul\/13\/fruitful-recruiting-ccsd-makes-strides-in-addressi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clark County NV<\/a> &#8211; doing much better than last year with only 358 teacher vacancies now compared to 825\u00a0last year due to big teacher raises ($34K to $40.9K) and bonuses for teaching in high needs schools<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/posts\/in\/2016\/07\/13\/ritz-indiana-teacher-shortage-still-a-problem-needs-to-be-addressed\/#.V4Zxu-grI2w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indiana<\/a> &#8211; Superintendent Ritz is trying to solve the shortage through PR and Grow Your Own programs &#8211; outlines legislative push to solve the problem next year.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/posts\/co\/2016\/07\/12\/colorado-isnt-producing-nearly-enough-teachers-new-report-finds\/#.V4ZxyegrI2w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado <\/a>&#8211; teacher shortage to get worse before it gets better producing only 1976 new teachers to fill 3456 vacancies. And note that some teachers produced never go into teaching<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidephilanthropy.com\/home\/2016\/7\/12\/finding-the-cash-for-a-four-year-plan-to-alleviate-californi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California<\/a> &#8211; non-profits are filling the void to recruit teachers as education school enrollment has dropped 70% in ten years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wow &#8211; that is one day&#8217;s worth of articles on the difficulty in hiring teachers today.
