A recent article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paysonroundup.com\/news\/2016\/sep\/27\/states-teacher-shortage-slides-toward-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highlighted a survey <\/a>that said open teaching positions in Arizona have hit the crisis level.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h138049-p6\" class=\"permalinkable\">A survey of 230 districts revealed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"permalinkable\">25%\u00a0of the 8,200 empty slots went unfilled. Districts filled another<\/li>\n<li class=\"permalinkable\">22 percent of the open spots were filled by unconventional means, like leaving a long-term substitute in place or hiring someone with an \u201cemergency\u201d credential<\/li>\n<li class=\"permalinkable\">Another 465 teachers walked off the job or just didn\u2019t show up for work in the first four weeks of the semester.<\/li>\n<li class=\"permalinkable\">Districts unable to find credentialed teachers filled nearly 1,000 of the 2,000 remaining vacant positions with long-term substitutes,<\/li>\n<li class=\"permalinkable\">34 classrooms with administrators who took to the classroom,<\/li>\n<li class=\"permalinkable\">540 of the positions were filled with teachers on reduced contracts,<\/li>\n<li class=\"permalinkable\">55 positions were filled by university teaching students who didn\u2019t yet have a degree,<\/li>\n<li class=\"permalinkable\">65 by creating multi-grade classrooms and 146 by combining existing classes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"permalinkable permalinking\">Out of the 1,800 people hired without conventional credentials, about<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"permalinkable permalinking\">733 were awaiting their certification<\/li>\n<li class=\"permalinkable permalinking\">347 had \u201cemergency\u201d certificates with the promise they would eventually get a credential<\/li>\n<li class=\"permalinkable permalinking\">576 received an \u201cinterim\u201d certificate while working on an internship<\/li>\n<li class=\"permalinkable permalinking\">156 were immigrants here on a work visa<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All in all &#8211; when people say there is no teacher shortage we kind of chuckle &#8211; that&#8217;s great to say from a high level think tank, but down at the HR level &#8211; they know they cannot find the talent.
