{"id":13338,"date":"2019-08-15T12:24:57","date_gmt":"2019-08-15T17:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/?p=13338"},"modified":"2019-09-27T09:02:06","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T14:02:06","slug":"police-officer-teacher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/blog\/insights\/police-officer-teacher\/","title":{"rendered":"From Police Officer to Teacher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a great article that highlights why we do what we do at Teachers of Tomorrow &#8211; helping people change their careers so that every student has a great teacher.\u00a0 In Indiana, Police <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs4indy.com\/2019\/08\/13\/impd-to-ips-retired-captain-follows-dream-to-teach-6th-graders-on-the-east-side\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Captain\u00a0Michael Elder<\/a> has transitioned from the force to the classroom, now teaching 11 and 12-year-olds math, science, social studies and English.<\/p>\n<p>This is his first year as a teacher for Ralph Waldo Emerson School 58 in the Indianapolis Public Schools district.\u00a0 Elder always dreamed of becoming a teacher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was an instructor for IMPD for probably 29 of my 32 years that I was there, so I always liked to teach,\u201d said Elder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found this program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/indiana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teachers of Tomorrow<\/a>, and it was a transition of taking my bachelors and turning into an education degree,\u201d said Elder, \u201cWe talked and talked and in October of last year we were eating dinner and my wife goes, &#8216;is this something you really want to do?&#8217; I said yeah, and she said, &#8216;let\u2019s look into it.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was the area that I patrolled on late shift,\u201d said Elder, \u201cA lot of things have changed since 1986.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is such a great story and why we do this.
