{"id":13787,"date":"2019-09-11T09:52:41","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T14:52:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/?p=13787"},"modified":"2022-11-11T23:14:26","modified_gmt":"2022-11-12T05:14:26","slug":"edtpa-coming-texas-north-carolina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/blog\/insights\/edtpa-coming-texas-north-carolina\/","title":{"rendered":"edTPA coming to Texas (and North Carolina)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a Texas edTPA pilot going on right now as the first phase in changing from the PPR or Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities test.\u00a0 The move is designed to have an exam that better determines the knowledge of our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/texas\/teacher-resources\/texes-tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Texas Teachers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We are already working on it with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachersoftomorrow.org\/northcarolina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Carolina Teachers<\/a> &#8211; and we continue to monitor both the good and the bad from edTPA.<\/p>\n<p>So it was kind of cool to see this article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niutoday.info\/2019\/09\/02\/ace-college-of-ed-licensure-students-nail-100-percent-passage-on-spring-2019-edtpa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Northern Illinois University<\/a> that had a 100% pass rate on edTPA this year from their teachers.\u00a0 My first thought is &#8211; what did they do?<\/p>\n<p>Notes from the article &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Her math lesson focused on two-dimensional shapes, including their associated vocabulary and spellings. She devised and developed her original lesson with her cooperating teacher but, after watching the video filmed that day, decided to revise and deliver it again.<\/li>\n<li>Fellow May graduate Aaron Goodin also honed in on the edTPA\u2019s insistence on active learning. \u201cedTPA really focuses on multimodal learning and the active nature of children\u2019s learning \u2013 visual, audio, hands-on kinesthetic activities,\u201d says Goodin, who also earned a B.S.Ed. in Early Childhood Education. \u201cThe edTPA is looking for students to be actually engaged and not just sitting there.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Goodin, who student-taught in a second-grade classroom at Rockford\u2019s Johnson Elementary School, based his edTPA submission on a cross-disciplinary science lesson about nature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think the most important take from the article was that you have to do the work on edTPA to be successful<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both took advantage of free workshops offered on weekends, and both were equipped with resources (\u201cMaking Good Choices\u201d support resource and handbooks) to help guide decision making prior to their successful edTPA submissions.\u00a0 \u201cI started preparing over winter break, when we were in between semesters.
